What are Highlights? Highlights and Comments top
 
enLighter Highlights are sections of a given web page's text that have been highlighted for emphasis, reference, or for easy searching later.  A Highlight will have a location, text content, and a color or style.  The color and style of Highlights are defined by the Category (more in the Categories section of this Manual).  Therefore, using Categories, Highlights can have intrinsic meaning simply by the way they look.


 
What are Comments? Highlights and Comments top
 
enLighter Comments are the textual notes that somebody has added to a Highlight or Snapshot (more on Snapshots below).  Highlights are essentially "anchors" or locators for specific Comments.  The content of a Comment can be anything relevant to the Highlight or the information contained within the document.  Comments can be extremely powerful and useful additions that can serve as memory cues and search aids, as well as adding personalized data to any web page.

Once you have enLighter running in your browser, you can add a Highlight or Comment at any time as you navigate the Web.  You can add them directly to the webpage or other HTML document you are viewing in your browser.  Any page that is Highlighted or Snapshot will be stored and kept forever.

In order to specify where on the currently displayed page you wish to add your Highlight or Comment, you need to "select" some text.  Click and drag your mouse across text and you will see a section change color.  When you release your mouse button, the section will remain.  In effect, you are selecting a "start" and "end" position for your selection.  The contrasted section of text is now "selected" and can be Highlighted (more below).

First, have a look at a few of the buttons on your enLighter toolbar.

The first two buttons after the enLighter main menu button are the Highlight and Comment buttons respectively.  The Highlight button has an additional drop-down menu accessed by clicking the attached arrow.  This menu contains a complete list of all active Categories and Libraries, as well as access to specific Settings and Managers.  Selecting a Category will set the "current" Category - i.e. the Category that will be applied by default - more below.

Clicking either of the Highlight or Comment buttons (as opposed to the menu arrow) without first making a selection (see Selecting Text above) will have no effect.  You need to indicate where, or what part of the document, you want to add a Highlight and/or Comment.  Once you have made a "selection" of text, you can do one of the following:

Specify a Category Select a specific Category from the Highlight menu (press the arrow beside the Highlight button).  If you have made a text selection, this will highlight the selection and store both the Document (if new) and the Highlight in the chosen Category and Library (the Core Library in Retriever).  Otherwise it will set the selected Category as current.
Press the Highlight button This will highlight the current selection and store both the Document (if new) and the Highlight in the current Category (rest your cursor over the button to see which Category is active).
Press the Comment button This will open the Comment editor (see Adding a Comment below).  If not cancelled, this will highlight the current selection and store both the Document (if new) and the Highlight and Comment in the selected Category.

After making a text selection (see above), you can "right-click" (i.e. use the right mouse button instead of the left) on the selection to show a "context" menu.  This menu gives access to the most common enLighter commands for the given situation.

Similar to the Highlight button menu described above, you can select a specific Category or add a Comment directly from this menu. 

If you were to right-click on an existing Highlight, you would get a menu similar to that shown in Editing below.

You can add a Comment immediately to a Highlight by using the method described in the Buttons and Context Menu sections above, but how do you add a Comment to an existing Highlight?  First of all, for Professional and Networks users, if you did not create the Highlight, i.e. you do not "own" the Highlight, you will not be able to add a Comment to it.  If you wish, you may make another Highlight overtop of their Highlight, or perhaps just near the other one. 

To add a Comment to one of your existing Highlights, you need to "right click" on the Highlight.  This is similar to "clicking" on things, except once you have the mouse cursor overtop the Highlight, press the rightmost mouse button instead of the left button.  This will show a popup menu similar to the following:

If you select "Edit" from this menu, you will be shown the dialog that allows you to alter the Comment and other information about the Highlight.  For more, see the Editing section below.

Now that there are Comments on a page, how do you see them?  Pass your mouse over a Highlight.  If that Highlight has a Comment, or if your Options are set to always show popups, you will see a window similar to this:

enLighter Retriever shows less information due to only one user and Library.

The style of the window and the content shown will depend on both the Highlight and Comment and the settings you have made in your Options.

Note that Highlights with Comments will have little bubbles beside them.  The bubble will be white if you are the author of the Comment, and yellow if not (Professional and Networks only).  In addition, there may be a number associated with a Footnote if you have Footnotes on (see below).  Footnotes are a great way to have all of the page's Comments collected in an easy-to-see list.


Editing Adding Highlights and Comments top
 
Much like Adding a Comment above, you may right-click on an existing Highlight to edit it.  When you add a Comment or edit an existing Highlight and/or Comment, you will be shown the following dialog:



This dialog allows you to edit the Comment and the Category / Library.

This gives you the opportunity to change the Category or the Comment for the selected Highlight.  enLighter Retriever users do not require the top Library settings.  You can even add text formatting like bold or underline to your Comment for extra emphasis, or you can include hyperlinks that will be accessible in the Footnotes.

Using the right-click method described in Adding a Comment above, select the "Remove" option from the menu.  You will be prompted if you want to remove the Highlight permanently from this document.  This will remove both the Highlight and any associated Comment from the stored Document.  Again, you need to own a Highlight (i.e. added the Highlight originally) to be able to remove it. 


 
Footnotes Highlights and Comments top
 
enLighter can automatically generate indexed footnotes from the Comments on a displayed page.  Highlights do not generate footnotes.  The footnotes will appear in a separate section at the bottom of the page.  Footnote reference numbers will also appear next to the Commented sections themselves.  To turn footnotes on or off, use the Settings menu in the Highlighter menu.


 
Snapshots Highlights and Comments top
 
Snapshots are essentially Highlights without textual content.  Snapshots are located at the very beginning of the associated page (i.e. a location of zero) and have a camera as an icon.  Snapshots can also have Comments which can be added by right-clicking as described above. 

Snapshots are used to quickly store a web page without selecting text or otherwise deciding what to Highlight first.  To take a Snapshot of a displayed document, you can use the item from the Main Menu or you can display a Snapshot button on the toolbar from the Options page.  You need to select a Category (and Library if not using Retriever) for the Snapshotted Document.  This selection does not affect your currently selected Category.
