Check for Update Features and Tools top

The main menu and the Options menu both offer a "Check for Update" function.  If you are online, this feature will contact enlighter.com to see if you are running the latest version of the product.  If successful and a newer version is available, you will be prompted to download and install the newer version.  This process, if you press OK, will close all open browsers and automatically download and install the update.  Once completed, you can open a new browser and will be instantly running the latest version of the product.

SMTP Email (Professional and Networks only)
Unless it has been restricted (Professional and Networks), you can send an enLighter page as an email attachment.  The attachment will use Javascript to show the popups, so you do not need to have enLighter to view the Highlights and Comments on the sent page.  Footnotes are also automatically generated to insure the recipient can read the Comments.

Sending Email Email Features and Tools top

Sending email will use your default mail program.  This is the program that opens when you click on email links in your browser.  Windows can be told to use any mail client as your default mail program.  The message will be compiled and the page attached using the filename of your choosing.  You can select recipients and type your message as you normally do.

SMTP Email
(Professional and Networks only)
Email Features and Tools top

SMTP mail talks directly to your mail server (it does not use an email client).  SMTP mail requires a bit more information from you.  You may need to set up your SMTP account if it has not been done by your system administrator.

Provide only the information necessary to access your SMTP mail server.

Only add your authentication (username and password) if it is necessary.

Save As File Features and Tools top

Much like the attachment to an email (see above), you can also save the currently viewed page to an external HTML file.  This option is available in the enLighter main menu.  Again, popups are handled using JavaScript, so viewing the page does not require enLighter.  Select an appropriate path and filename to save the file.

Jump To Buttons Features and Tools top

These are the rightmost buttons on your toolbar, should you have them shown in your Options.

Use the jump to buttons to quickly find Highlights.

When active (blue instead of grey) they allow you to scroll to the next and previous Highlight on the current page (assuming the page can scroll).  This can be a very useful tool for finding Highlights as well as setting up jump points for presentations.

Tools
(Professional and Networks only)

Topics:   Import / Export of Libraries
Tools are only available in enLighter Professional and enLighter for Networks since they deal with Libraries and other features not necessary in Retriever.  You can access the Tools from the main menu or the Search menu.

Import / Export of Libraries Tools Features and Tools top

You can export and import entire enLighter Libraries.  This can be useful for moving Libraries as well as archiving Libraries that are no longer in use but you would like to keep.  The resulting .enl file is compressed to take up as little space as possible.

Provide all of the properties required for each tool.  You may have to make a Library active to export it.  You can only import Libraries that have been exported using enLighter, and in the form of .enl files.

Options Features and Tools top

Now that you have the various features and functions of enLighter under your thumb, you may want to customize it.  The Options screen, available from the main menu, provides you a way to set up enLighter according to your own preferences.  There are differences among the products, but most Options are fairly self-explanatory.  Here are some descriptions of various Options:

Option Description
Toolbar Buttons Select the buttons you want visible on your toolbar.
QuickSearch You can set the field width of the QuickSearch on the toolbar, whether you want the field to "auto-complete" entries (i.e. try to match previous terms), and how many of those previous terms you want remembered.
Popup Options These settings can either provide you with a lot of details at a glance, or you may prefer to keep the content to a minimum for a smaller popup.
Date Options The date options can be very important.  Apply the settings that best suit what you are used to and how much detail you want displayed.  Notice how the detail settings affect the popup width (dynamically displayed above the date settings) if the date is shown.
