What are Documents? Documents top

enLighter Documents consist of a web (HTML) page and all associated Highlights and Comments.  Documents are uniquely identified by their address (or "URL", e.g. http://www.somesite.com/mainpage.html) and their content (the textual content of the page, not affected by the addition of Comments).  A single URL can have multiple versions of Documents due to changing content.  The simplest example is a news page, whose content is constantly changing.

Each Document version can have an unlimited number of Highlights and Comments attached to it.  In addition, for enLighter Professional and enLighter for Networks users, Documents may also have Images and associated Comments.  Documents can have several "Categories" which are the collective Categories of its Highlights and Comments.

Documents are viewed in one of two ways: either in normal navigation when a stored Document matches a currently viewed Document (this involves Auto-Retrieval, which is explained in the Libraries section of this manual, or using the Document Manager.  Even Search Results use the Document Manager for display.

You can access the Document Manager from the Search menu, the main menu Manage list, after conducting an enLighter Search, or by clicking on the "Documents" tab when viewing another manager.

The Document Manager components.

The Document Manager components are as follows:
  1. View Mode - the current view mode will be checked (one of: current, search, or library(ies)).  See below for descriptions of each mode.
  2. Library Label - if in Library mode, the label of the currently displayed Library will be shown here.
  3. Change Library - in Library mode, this will present other Libraries that can be viewed.  enLighter Retriever will not display this button as it has only one Library.
  4. Results Per Page - how many Documents to show at a given time.
  5. Document List - displays a list of all relevant Documents.  The format is Document Title, Samples (if any), Date added, and URL Link to open the originating page.
  6. Document Options - these icons will either (X) delete the given Document, (i) display a list of associated images (if any) (Professional and Networks only), and (>) display a Preview of the given Document.
  7. Preview Area - area used to display any stored Document being Previewed.
  8. New Window - opens the stored Document being Previewed in its own window.
  9. Movable Separator - change the size of the Preview area by clicking and dragging this bar.
  10. Pages - displays the currently viewed page number of Documents in the entire list.  Press the arrows to view previous or next pages, or to continue gathering Documents.

The current mode will poll all Auto-Retrieve Libraries (the Core Library for Retriever users) for any stored Documents matching the browser's current web page(s).  This provides a quick way to access stored Documents.

Search Results Documents Manager Documents top

This mode will be opened after you conduct an enLighter Search.  The matching Documents to the previous Search will be displayed in the "search" mode.  The list may include samples from the matching Document or Highlights and Comments:

A sample Search result.  The search term(s) are in bold.

The samples indicate whether they came from a Highlight, Comment, or the original document content.  The originating search term(s) are in bold.  To start another Search or modify the most recent criteria, press the "Search" tab at the top of the Manager screen.

Library Documents Manager Documents top

This mode displays all of the documents in the given Library.  enLighter Retriever users will see all the documents in their single Core Library, but the other products will have a "change" Library button to select a different Library.  Samples are not displayed in this mode.

Preview Documents Manager Documents top

The rightmost column can be used to Preview the selected Document, complete with Highlights and Comments.  The arrow to the right of the Document title in the left column's list will display the stored Document.  If space is too limited, you can click on "new window" in the upper right of the Preview area to view the stored Document in its own window.

Windows XP SP2: Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has been
designed to trust only web pages from the Internet, not
your own hard drive.  Thus stored Documents may trigger
the SP2 warning when viewed from your hard drive.  This
behaviour is based solely on the content of the originating
page, thus cannot be controlled by enLighter.

Delete Documents Manager Documents top

Beside the title for a Document entry you will see an icon in the shape of a red "X".  Pressing the X will prompt if you want to delete that Stored Document.  In multi-user situations (such as enLighter for Networks) you will only be allowed to delete Documents you own (originally added to the given Library).

Images Documents Manager Documents top

Applies to enLighter Professional and enLighter for Networks only.

An icon in the form of an "i" beside a Document indicates the presence of at least one image.  Clicking on this icon will open the Image Manager to the "single document" selected.  You can view and edit Images using this specialized manager.

The Image Manager is very similar to the Document Manager.  There are only two modes however, the "single document" mode mentioned above and a Library mode identical to the Document Manager.  All Documents in the selected Library that have images will be listed and viewable.
