Lighting presents from around 20% to 30% of all energy consumption in a typical office or public building in northern hemisphere. In order to reduce the energy consumption we need to take three steps: maximise daylight penetration into the building, integrate daylight and artificial lighting and use energy efficient lighting equipment in an energy efficient way.
The approach we take when designing or consulting on the sustainable lighting is based on the maximisation of the daylight penetration into the building whilst reducing the glare as well as integration of the artificial lighting with the daylight. The tools that we use to provide such advice are analyses of daylight factor of the buildings, shading studies, Light Energy Numeric Indicator (LENI) and the knowledge of lighting control systems.
